Ever since I&#8217;ve been leading a delightful double life as a PM on the Google Ads team and the CEO of Google Comparison Inc, a wholly owned subsidiary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danshapiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Untitled.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-408 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/233;margin: 10px;\" alt=\"Sparkbuy Swan Song\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.danshapiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Untitled-300x233.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.danshapiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Untitled-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/www.danshapiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Untitled-1024x797.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.danshapiro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Untitled.png 1043w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/a>of Google.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been an amazing run &#8211; we&#8217;ve been working on bringing transparency to products like credit cards, new vehicles, and auto insurance.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve worked with engineers and PMs who are among the best in the business.<\/p>\n<p>And all the rumors are true: Google is truly a magical place to be.\u00a0 Actually having healthy food available all the time, for free &#8211; both in the literal and cognitive load sense &#8211; is amazing.\u00a0 The people are terrific.\u00a0 Everyone, at every level in the organization, cares deeply about the company and it&#8217;s mission.\u00a0 For each person outside the organization pointing their finger and yelling at something Google&#8217;s done, there is guaranteed to be at least one Googler, standing up in a company all-hands, quietly and respectfully giving the executive team hell about the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve worked at Microsoft, and I&#8217;ve worked at Realnetworks, and I have a lot of friends who&#8217;ve worked elsewhere in the tech industry.\u00a0 And I&#8217;d humbly submit that if you&#8217;re working at a BigCo and you haven&#8217;t at least applied to Google to check it out, your career strategy is nonoptimal. In fact, if this describes you, ping me on Twitter &#8211; I&#8217;d be happy to discuss 1:1 in a bit more detail and, if it&#8217;s the right fit, refer you in.<\/p>\n<p>But!<\/p>\n<p>When I sold Sparkbuy, I took an advance from the very nice people at O&#8217;Reilly Publishing to write a book about startup CEOs.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been two years and they have been very patient while I&#8217;ve finished the first draft and not much else. (Fortunately, the spectacular Matt Blumberg has written <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Startup-CEO-Field-Scaling-Business\/dp\/1118548361\">his own book on the subject<\/a> which should tide you over).\u00a0 But it&#8217;s time to get that done.\u00a0 I also have another, non-software product that&#8230; well, more on that shortly when it&#8217;s ready to share.<\/p>\n<p>So the fantastic folks at Google have agreed to let me take a leave of absence for a few months to scratch some of these itches.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s going to be a great summer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some places are just delightful to work.
